The federal government, reeling under intense farmer protest,s especially in Punjab and Haryana, has introduced improved procurement targets for rice and cotton during the latest kharif marketing season and said that it has used in excess of ₹1.90 lakh crore in 2019-20 for procuring rice and wheat on MSP.

Announcing cotton procurement targets for the season, for the first time, Textile Secretary Ravi Capoor claimed the condition-owned Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) would procure one hundred twenty five lakh bales (just one bale is one hundred seventy kg) of cotton, which is 20 lakh bales far more than the one hundred and five lakh bales procured in the former season.

Capoor, who briefed the media along with Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agarwal, Food stuff and Community Distribution Secretary Sudhanshu Panday and Food stuff Corporation of India (FCI) CMD, DV Prasad, assured the farmers that the CCI would be willing to procure any sum of excellent cotton that farmers carry.
