WASHINGTON—The U.S. intelligence group publicly verified it is trying to ascertain whether the coronavirus could have escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, the city exactly where the pandemic began.

In an unusual public assertion, the Office of the Director of Countrywide Intelligence, or ODNI, also mentioned that U.S. intelligence businesses concur with the broad scientific consensus that “the Covid-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified.”
