Tens of hundreds of seafarers are trapped at sea doing work outside of their optimum 11-month contracts, as the emergence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant hinders cargo ship operators’ skill to modify more than crews.

With the world’s 1.5 million sailors paying out very long stretches significantly from land, only about a quarter of them are completely vaccinated, ship operators, crewing agencies and marketplace trade bodies estimate.
